Devil’s Cub
The excesses of the young Marquis of Vidal are even wilder than his father’s before him. Not for nothing is the young duellist and gamester called ‘the Devil’s Cub’. But when he is forced to leave the country, Mary Challoner discovers his wicked plan to abduct her sister. And only by daring to impersonate her can Mary save her sibling from certain ruin.
Hero: Dominic, Marquis of Vidal
Heroine: Mary Challoner
Setting:The exact setting of Devil’s Cub is debateable, as the hero and heroine appear again as grandparents in An Infamous Army, which is set in 1815. If we follow convention then Devil’s Cub occurs 24 years, plus a couple of months, after the end of These Old Shades, which would place it in 1780, on the grounds that the Jacobite Rebellion was in 1745, ten years before These Old Shades and the Prince of Conde was 20 in 1756. Dominic is said to be just short of twenty-four, hence 1780.
This obviously calls into question the 1815 date of An Infamous Army but as that involved the Battle of Waterloo, it is best to suspend disbelief when reading that story, and allow that Heyer did not consider too carefully the chronological impact of the relationship between the heroine of that story, Barbara, and Dominic and Mary.
